ICC Calls For Action After Man Burns Israeli Flags

Montreal, Canada – The Israeli Canadian Council (ICC) is calling for action after a man was caught on camera stealing and burning Israeli flags hung outside a Jewish day school in Montreal, Canada. The incident occurred during Israel’s 75th Independence Day celebrations and has been labeled as a hate crime by the ICC.

Following the release of the video on social media, Montreal police launched an investigation and have since identified and arrested a suspect in connection with the incident.

“This is a despicable act of hate against the Jewish community and Israel,” said Ron East, founder and president of the Israeli Canadian Council. “It is unacceptable that individuals feel emboldened to commit such acts of hate and violence against a minority community.”

Antisemitic incidents have been on the rise in Canada in recent years, with the Jewish community being the most targeted religious minority for hate crimes reported to police in 2021. “This incident is just another example of the rising tide of antisemitism in our country,” said East. “We need to take action to ensure that all Canadians, regardless of their faith or ethnicity, can live in peace and security.”

The ICC commends the Montreal police for their swift action in identifying and arresting the suspect. “We cannot allow this type of behavior to go unpunished,” said East. “We need to send a strong message that hate crimes will not be tolerated in our society.”

The Israeli Canadian Council stands in solidarity with the Jewish community in Montreal and across Canada. “We will not be intimidated by acts of hate and violence,” said East. “We will continue to work tirelessly to combat antisemitism and promote tolerance, understanding, and respect for all Canadians.”
